Emotional sweating is produced by apocrine glands. These glands sit in hair-bearing areas like the underarms and groin and are activated by emotional or stress-related sympathetic arousal. The secretions are thicker and are released into hair follicles; they become noticeable mainly because bacteria on the skin break down the secretions and create odor. In contrast, eccrine glands handle cooling the body through thin, watery sweat and are spread more widely across the skin, responding primarily to heat and thermoregulation rather than emotion. Mucous glands and sebaceous glands have other roles (mucus production and skin/oil secretion, respectively) and are not the primary glands involved in emotional sweating.
